3D Film made using Iphone

Jitsuro Mase has invented a way to make 3D images using the 2D screen of an iPhoneiPod touch or an iPad. The invention, called i3DG, is produced by DIRECTIONS, Inc, a Japanese media production company. It has already received an Honorable Mention at the 2010 Ars Electronica Festival.

i3DG utilizes three half-silvered mirrors which rest on an iPhone or iPad’s screen at a 45-degree angle. These mirrors work in conjunction with film or animation which has been designed with the i3DG in mind. If you were to look at an image designed for the i3DG without actually slipping the device on you would see that the screen has been split up into three layers, each a mirror image, with a gap in between each layer for the placement of the mirrors. Artists can use video editing software such as Final Cut, Flash, Premier, After Effects and MaxMSP / Jitter to make up the 960×640 format required. For artists looking to do even more with their work they can design an iPhone or iPad application which takes advantage of the touch screen and accelerometer to allow viewers to manipulate the film or animation produced.
