3D TV & me – I’m loving it!

This weekend the weather was fab. However, I’m sad to admit that I spent most of the weekend lured inside by the purchase of a new TV … Holding back the temptation to gush, I feel compelled to write about it.

From Black and White to Colour, from stereo to surround sound, from standard (4×3) to widescreen (16×9), and from analogue to HDTV. All these TV transitions I’ve experienced and loved. But, until this weekend, I wasn’t sure whether or not to embrace 3D TV as the natural progression to converge the fantasy of TV and film with the real world. Now I am sure. Now I am hooked. One thing I will say, however, is that 3D TV seems to look more 3D than real-life. It’s almost über 3D.

Actually older than colour film, the first commercial 3D movie, The Power of Love, premiered at the Los Angeles Ambassador Hotel in 1922. Only screened once, this format didn’t catch on and attempts to revive 3D in the 50s and 70s proved more kitsch than engaging, and it wasn’t really until IMAX 3D attracted attention with short films, exploring the animal kindgom, space exploration and life beneath the waves, that audience interest in 3D was re-established.

As somebody who loves watching 3D movies at the IMAX (… but only sitting in the last 3 rows), I was already a fan of 3D at the cinema. But in my home? I wasn’t sure. It wasn’t a concept that had ever entered my thoughts. So, how did my journey begin?[Keep reading…]
