Known for their data storage products and back-up solutions, LaCie has introduced the LaCie Slim Blu-ray, a portable optical drive that puts Blu-ray playback and recording into a thin, portable package. In addition to Blu-ray burning, the drive supports playback of several video formats, including Blu-ray HD and 3D Blu-ray.
The drive also supports DVD and CD playback and data burning. The drive boasts read and write speeds of 6x on BD-R SL and 4x for BD-R DL. It connects via USB 2.0, and is bus powered, requiring no AC power adapter. LaCie notes on their website that these speeds may not be fully realized, due to the limited speeds of USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. Built for portability, it weighs 11.3 ounces and measures 5.4 x 6.1 x 1 inches (HWD). The slim form-factor and bus power should make this drive well suited to use on the go. While many desktop replacements feature integrated Blu-ray playback, Blu-ray disc burning is not common. With Blu-ray being entirely absent in value laptops, netbooks, and most laptops sold in the last five years, this drive also allows consumers to add functionality to their current machines. The LaCie Slim Blu-ray is available through the LaCie website for $264.99 with a 2-year limited warranty. Included with the drive is a USB 2.0 Y-cable and a utilities DVD containing the user manual and software.
