Let there be light at NAB!

I mentioned before that cameras seem to get all the attention at NAB.

The truth is there are so many elements to  putting a video together, as all professionals know. Lighting is one of those key essentials.

The evolution of lighting has seen in the last few years, taking us from heavy hot filament driven instruments to color balanced fluorescent to LED lights. Until now LEDs of work best in small intimate surroundings. Some larger systems have been starting to be seen. But now I discovered Hexolux  at NAB.

And I must tell you I was tremendously impressed. The system highlight is the flexibility. You can start with one lamp and add the second, third, fourth, fifth or as many as you need for your lighting demands. You can create anything that you need and with the specially designed Rella or the Xoft softbox,  you have an unlimited range of lighting supplies within your reach.

Hexolux is sending 3DGuy one instrument to get started doing a hands-on review. We will report on that as soon as possible. And then, in June, they have agreed to send us a three-light kit so that we can use it on-set in practical situations and report back on  how it performs.

3DGuy shares Hexolux’ press release below. Jump to their technical specs. I am sure you’re going to be as impressed as I was!

From now on Heolux is going to be my light of choice! — 3DGuy, Al Caudullo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(NAB 2013) Hexolux will unveil the Xum7, their revolutionary LED Fresnel at NAB 2013. The unique and sporty design of the Xum7 is based on hexagons to function as a modular system packing more light into a seamless configuration.  It can be connected together in teams so you can transform a small source into a large, bright source. This gives you a faster lighting system with less to load in, and more to work with. This buys more time to craft the image and allows you to shoot more in a day.

The Hexolux Xum7 is the most efficient LED Fresnel light in watts per lumen. Its super lightweight at only 5 lbs, DMX remote control and optional wireless DMX. Introducing f-stop dimming, absolutely flicker-free, silent hybrid cooling, and the highest CRI in the LED industry.

The new Hexolux CineWhite™ LED solves the color-rendering dilemmas most cinematographers associate with LEDs. It produces pure white on film and digital cameras and matches existing tungsten sources. You will get no surprises with its 98 CRI: gels look just right, everything looks just right.

The Hexolux Xum7 is the ultimate studio and field lighting instrument, boasting the highest ROI in the industry. It is designed to be the most efficient, most flexible, full spectrum, lightest weight, and coolest running light instrument ever created. It out performs other LEDs costing much more. Hexolux lights dramatically lower energy consumption.  Studio utility bills are drastically reduced which is both a cost savings and environmentally beneficial.

Everything in the portable 3 light kit, sets up much faster and lighter than anything you have used before.  The hexagon softbox is ultra lightweight, instant set up with SpeedSwap™ mounting, and has an inner removable diffuser panel for additional contrast control. The 7 foot umbrella can be used with one light, two, or a team of three for a big, soft, color mixing light with fantastic throw.

Their sustainable manufacturing process uses only high quality, longer-lasting components, and technology to make the lights even more efficient to minimize their environmental impact.
