LG Optimus 3D to Get 3D Treatment for Gingerbread Patch

The Optimus 3D, LG’s premiere 3D smartphone, has the ability to convert 2D images into 3D images, as well as 2D videos into 3D videos. With the Gingerbread patch coming out in October, you will be able to convert Apps and Games from 2D to 3D too.

The way this conversion works is the phone uses software to take photographs and estimates the depth from each individual pixel, generating a new image from it. The phone then shows the two images at the same time, the original image and a slightly different approximation, to create a 3D effect. This process is how the 2D to 3D conversion works for videos too, however the process is more complicated as videos must be converted frame by frame.

This Gingerbread patch will apply this same process to any visually stimulating Apps or Games you might be playing on your phone. So far it will only work in landscape mode but this shouldn’t be a problem as most games are already set in landscape mode.
