Report: HDTVs, Blu-Ray Players Top Wish Lists

HDTVs and Blu-Ray Players are at the top of many peoples agendas when considering new electronics purchases.

Nearly 25% of more than 2,000 U.S. consumers surveyed said an HDTV tops their list of intended consumer electronics purchases in the next six months, and that’s with 60% of respondents saying they already own an HDTV, according to a report from ABI Research.

Blu-ray Disc players were second on consumers’ wish lists, ABI reported, with 17% saying they intended to purchase one in the next six months.

“As consumers replace older TVs, there really isn’t much choice now but to buy an HDTV, so even if the consumer doesn’t necessarily want to view HDTV content, that’s usually what they end up with,” said ABI senior analyst Michael Inouye. “Prices for HDTVs have fallen quite a bit, and many households are now replacing their second- and third-string televisions.”

Video game consoles came in third, at 16%. More than 45% of respondents said they had no intent to make a major consumer electronics purchase in the next six months.

Price usually topped the list of factors consumers are considering when it comes to their electronics purchases, ABI reported. There was also a surprise when it came to tablet purchase intent.

“One surprising result in regard to media tablets was that Windows came in second after Apple, and ahead of Android,” said ABI practice director Jason Blackwell.
