The Entertainment Technology Center and a 3D presentation

After one of our own, Al3DGuy.tv visited a presentation leading up to the 3D Summit this next week, we have heard nothing but the best about the Entertainment Technology Center at USC.

The people at the Entertainment Technology Center at USC put together a presentation on Monday, September 19th 2011, in anticipation of the 3D Summit now taking place at the Hollywood/Highland Center. This included a guided tour by the Center Director, Phil Lelyveld, who graciously conducted a tour and directed our attention toward the future of 3D.

The Entertainment Technology Center was founded by Mr. George Lucas and the CTO’s of the seven major studios of the time. Its major achievement in the 90’s was that it was the place where they hammered out the guidelines for digital projection in the theaters.

Utilizing the available participants the center was able to do a demonstration to compare and contrast the two major technologies being utilized now for 3D television. The first used “passive shutter” glasses and the featured view screen is made by LG. The active shutter glasses and display was in full resolution but the only way you can get that is with a blue ray player and its accompanying tools.

There’s a lot of consumer research going on right now that is trying to help with a solution of finding out if consumers prefer the passive or active displays. Both technologies showed in the demonstration that they have their advantages and disadvantages that consumers may or may not like. If consumers demand this technology though, over the split resolution, the cable, satellite, and over the air transmission stations will have to be engineered to handle it, and this is what the center is prepared to help anticipate these possible changes for those companies.

Finally, the Entertainment Technology Center had one of the most amazing gaming rooms set up with systems like the brand new glasses that users can just plug into an I-Phone and poof you are immediately transported into a 3D virtual world of gaming. There was also the very impressive hood developed by Sony that you simply place over your head like the older virtual gaming devices to enjoy a 3D environment that you can play different games while “in.”

“With all of the expanding studies and new 3D technology emerging this event at the center was most intruiging” said Al3DGuy.tv. After his attendance at the event, Al looks forward to what will be emerging in 3D in the next few years.
