Virtual Reality: A Challenge to Film Industry

How would  you stay out of the view of a  360-degree camera  like this?

New Deal Studios filmed a short piece for Jaunt in Petaluma, Calif., this weekend.

The movie shoot had all the usual marks of a Hollywood production: shouts of “action!” and “cut!” and all those filming rituals. However, one thing’s different. Everyone but the actors needed to clear out of anywhere near the scene as soon as recording begins.

Debuted by Palo Alto, the startup Jaunt, is a  360-degree camera that made this new SOP in the set!

Avoiding the camera is just one of the challenges awaiting studios that choose to work in virtual reality. That requires creative equipment set ups too. Lighting and sound equipment need to be strategically placed outside the shot, just like people.

“We’re helping to build the visual language of virtual reality,” New Deal Studios CEO Shannon Gans said. “That we’re very excited about.”

A firm release date for “The Mission” has not been set, but presumably it will coincide with Oculus Rift’s launch to consumers sometime in the next year.

  1. Can’t you just dress the crew as background actors, and have them wandering about the set?

Or just dig a big pit, have the camera poke itself up out of the pit on a strong mast, and then everybody on the crew just jumps into the pit….no problem! 😉
