Sky’s the limit for Oct. launch of 3D channel

The UK’s Sky will fully launch its 3D channel on October 1 but will only be available to those with the Sky+ HD package and a 3D-enabled television. The station has been live since April 3, but other than six Premier League football matches, has only been playing promotional snippets of 3D footage. The launch weekend highlights will include three days of live Ryder Cup coverage and two 3D films, Bolt and Monster vs Aliens.

The Premier League will also be shown from launch, along with other live sport. However, the company declined to provide any more detail of the channel’s content at this stage, only saying “further shows spanning entertainment and the arts will be announced closer to the service’s launch.

The station will run fresh first-run content in peak time, and show Sky’s ‘best-of 3D content’ during the rest of the day.

Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s chief executive, said: “As with High Definition, 3D is set to transform the way TV is enjoyed in homes nationwide. Following hot on the heels of the success of 3D cinema, Sky customers will now be the first anywhere in Europe to experience 3D TV from the comfort of their living rooms. They can look forward to a fantastic mix of live sport, blockbuster movies, and innovative entertainment and arts shows.”

Sky’s 3D station, the first of its kind in Europe, has been made available to over 1500 pubs across the UK since April, broadcasting the Premier League matches.

The channel is compatible with Song, Samsung, LG and Panasonic 3D TV sets and will available to all those who subscribe to the Sky+ HD package. Customers who have the necessary technology and package in place, will need to call Sky’s general customer service number with the details of their TV set in order to activate the channel.

It is not yet known how many people nationally have bought a 3DTV. But retailers are reporting significant interest. Earlier this month John Lewis revealed that 15 per cent of all TVs over 40in sold in their stores are 3D TVs.
