Tom Hanks to Produce and Star in 3D Astronaut Movie

Tom Hanks, one of America’s greatest actors, has announced that he will be producing and starring in a new 3D movie.

Tom Hanks’s production company Playtone Productions plans to produce a 3D movie based on action-figure toy Major Matt Mason, using Hanks’s own screenplay.

The actor may also take the lead role and Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) is in discussions to direct the 3D live-action film. Major Matt Mason, a 1960s Mattel toy, was an astronaut who went to the moon and lived on the space station.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Playtone is also adapting Green Day’s American Idiot musical for the big screen and Neil Gaiman’s American Gods – the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning fantasy novel about a character named Shadow – for HBO television. Hanks is next up in Larry Crowne, which he also directed and wrote. It co-stars Julia Roberts and focuses on a man downsized from his job who returns to school to reinvent his life. It will debut July 1. Due in 2012 is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, in which Hanks costars with Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock.
