(Melbourne/Cannes) International 3D distributor 3D Content Hub introduces an offering of more than 30 films to its partners and new platforms in an effort to overcome the gridlock in the industry. The content package consists entirely of stereoscopic (native) 3D productions and includes award-winning short films as well as TV-length documentaries.
The move is intended to be a major statement to sceptics who maintain the myth of a 3D-content shortage. The Australian-based distributor attended MIPTV in Cannes to negotiate with various clients. CEO Torsten Hoffmann had always been vocal about large 3D libraries that are available from independent filmmakers, a fact that is oftentimes overlooked. The company represents more than 40 such producers and a portfolio of around 200 hours.
“In our Basic 3D VOD Package we are offering 34 films totalling about 7 hours from 10 countries. 3 of the films have previously won 1st prize awards at 3D Film Festivals and competitions”, says Hoffmann who has been in the 3D distribution business for more than 3 years.
Among the award-winning filmmakers are GoldenGate 3D, Al Caudullo, Ikuo Nakamura, and Jesse Blanchard:
-
‘Deus Ex Homine’ has been among the most watched 3D short films of the past years and has won four awards.
-
‘Easter Island Timescapes’ has won first prize at the prestigious Los Angeles 3D
Film Festival. -
The commercially successful wildlife documentary ‘Alligator Kingdom’ from 3Digital Vision is already widely distributed by broadcasters worldwide and is now available as Video-on-Demand.
“In our selection of documentaries, animation and short films we have been careful to look for quality as well as variety. We look forward to the audience’s reaction to some of our more innovate 3D films such as the fractal art pieces, the entertaining ‘Magic Touch’, or when we take the viewer’s point-of-view from a few of the most exciting rollercoaster rides in the world”, added Brinda Paul who is responsible for content acquisition for the company.
This VOD package is offered to all platforms, including IPTV, cable and Over-The-Top in an effort to kick-start the 3D VOD industry, globally. “In the past, producers and distributors have held back their rights until a 3D VOD market comes into existence in order to pay them reasonable license fees. At the same time 3D offerings have suffered from an inadequate content line-up both in terms of quantity as well as quality. Hence, consumers have rightly complained about the lack of 3D films,” says Hoffmann. 3D Content Hub has already negotiated terms with seven clients and expects that the license revenues for filmmakers will grow over time and by spreading this offering to as many services and countries as possible.
