“Smurfs 2″ earned a modest $5.2 million at the U.S. box office Wednesday as the Sony Pictures Animation sequel looks for a significant bump in overseas ticket sales.
Five-day U.S. projections for the Sony Animation sequel currently stand in the $35 million range but the 3D family toon, opening in 42 international territories this weekend, may reach $100 million worldwide.
