Horror movies are taken very seriously in Thailand. Its culture has everything to do with traditions and superstitions, one of which has to do with making sure we do not offend the spirits in the course of a production or making a film.
Often times after a production, an appeasing ceremony is held, decorated with the lighting of incense, a feast, and prayers, an apology to the unknown that surrounds us, telling them that we mean no harm. Today, 3D stereographer and filmmaker, our very own 3DGuy, Al Caudullo has been invited to participate in such ceremony, concluding the first ever 3D movie in Thailand, Mae Nak 3D. The ceremony was held at Wat Mahabut, a temple in which a Mae Nak shrine was built by the local in honor of her love and her spirit, and is still today worshipped by many Thais.
Al Caudullo was the 3D Stereographer on this movie. It was filmed using the Panasonic AG3DA1 and Nano Flash 3D and is the first major motion picture to be filmed and released in 3D in Thailand. The story of Mae Nak is one told from one generation to another, a love story that even death does not do them part. Mak, Nak’s husband is called upon in times of war, while Nak was left at home, pregnant with their baby. Nak and the baby died while she was giving birth to him. Her spirit haunts the area known to Thais as Phra Khanong as she waits for her husband’s return. When Mak returned, he has no idea that he has lost his family and is now living with ghosts. While the living tried to warn him, Nak’s spirit made sure that no one can take him away from her.
Mae Nak 3D premieres on February 20, 2012 and will be released in Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam on February 23, 2012. Be sure to check it out at a theater near you.
