BOE, the biggest display maker in China, used their Display Week 2014 booth to show off some of their most advanced displays – and they wowed attendees (see video). Highlights included a 98″ 8K (7680×4320) resolution LCD display that looked very impressive – even with a color gamut that was “only” 72% of NTSC. Brightness is 400 nits and contrast is speced at 1000:1.
From afar, this TV looks great but as you get closer you can see some lines, moire patterns and other issues that still need to be fixed. And there are some jaggies even though this is native 8K content. Nevertheless, BOE says they have already sold two of these displays to Japanese customers, but there can’t be that many customers for such a display. We didn’t ask the price, but you can bet it is very expensive.
Also on display were two UHD / 4K resolution displays at around 55″. One featured and oxide backplane with an LCD front plane, 73% of NTSC and The other was an OLED model (backplane technology not specified but probably Oxide) with 85% of NTSC color gamut. BOE says these are still being developed with the oxide LCD becoming available in late 2014 and 2015 being the target for OLED.
The company also showed a large glasses-free 3D display with an active parallax barrier and UHD resolution. We first saw this demonstrated in the Dolby suite at CES 2014. Brightness in 2D mode is 450 nits but only 150 nits in 3D mode, as you would expect. BOE says this is in mass production and Hisense will introduce the TV later this year
