July 27: The Master of the View-Master

This Sunday @ 2:00 PM!

The weather will be great so head on out to Governors Island and see the world through the eyes of the child within you.

Remember those View-Master reels you had as a kid? Come and meet Sheldon Aronowitz, the man with one of the largest collections in the world and discover the history of this amazing little device. No batteries needed.

He’ll have a variety of the best and the rarest reels for you to dive in to. Today we consider it a child’s toy but View-Masters were used as 3D travelogues, industrial and military training and even for medical journals.

Sheldon’s not only collects, but has photographed and documented everything from Times Square to Ellis Island on 3D View-Master Reels.

The history of View-Master begins in the 1930’s and has brought joy to many millions. The deceptively simple design has kept the device largely unchanged. With a little light and a few reels set with jewels of Kodachrome you can visit the Grand Canyon or time travel to the 1964 NY Worlds Fair. They even manufactured a great looking Art-Deco camera and equipment to make your own personal reels.

There’s a US company making custom reels even today and a Viewer that leverages the resolution of a Smart Phone Screen called a View-Vaster . And it’s made on a 3D Printer. Got that?

Watch this video ( above) from the 1950’s and be amazed at an America that actually made stuff! Nice to see it might be happenneing again.
