I’ve been a fan if IK Multimedia products for some time now, but this new iRig Mic has really charged me up with the performance of this compact yet powerfully clean mic.
It’s a large diaphragm digital condenser microphone with a 1″ condenser capsule smoothly packed into a tidy little enclosure. No wasted space here.

But that doesn’t tell the whole story. You really need to hook one of these up to your iPhone,iPad, iPad Touch, Mac, Android or even your PC to listen for yourself how good this baby is. I tested it with my iPhone and made an on the fly podcast that sounded amazingly crisp and clean.
In the studio I attached it to my PC and tested it for voice overs with both Grass Valley Edius and Premiere Pro CC. Both NLE’s yielded fantastic results. The iRig Mic comes with built in adjustment controls that supplement the apps from IK Multimedia. The onboard low-noise high-definition preamp, paired up with a 133dB SPL rating, give you the optimum audio recording in any environment. I hear that they work well as a rapping mic but if you’d like to consider other options check out Victor Bailey’s blog.
The multi-color LED level indicator keeps you alerted to shifts in audio. A built in earphone jack enables you to closely monitor as well.
The nicely designed table top mic stand and mic holder let’s you go anywhere. The mic holder is removable and can be attached to any standard mic stand. The iRig Mic has a female micro USB and included cables interface between Lightning cable to iDevices, to another Micro USB for Android devices and a standard USB for Mac and PC use.
Alongside iRig Mic Studio, IK Multimedia has also released a new modelling app, Mic Room, which allows you to use microphone profiles for more creativity. So in addition to recording the pure sound from iRig Mic Studio, you can also apply profiles to model other microphone configurations, offering even more versatility for using the mic in a wide variety of recording applications.
