All Round Sony 3D

At the ongoing SIGGRAPH 2010 show, Sony is unveiling the next step in the evolution of 3D technology: a volumetric 3D display that requires no 3D glasses called the RayModeler. Even the vivid imagination of the setting of Star Wars could be surpassed in just a few short years.

Sony develops many of the 3D subjects by using a multiple camera system to continuously capture the subject. The display at the show had a gesture sensor that would allow the 3D subject to react to a person’s motions from any angle. It also demonstrated a type of 3D “brick breaker” game where the ball would move across a true 3D plane.

Over here, the most concerning aspect is the game application. Although the industry has barely grasped motion technology and standard 3D, this new futuristic demonstration will open a new set of doors. Many games could benefit from this, such as: raising pets, manipulating in-game HUDs, investigation based games, etc.
