At its best, the film is a staggering underwater spectacle, a cinema of attractions that outclasses each of Cameron’s previous technical achievements. Many was left in awe watching James Cameron’s DeepSea Challenge 3D.

Deepsea Challenge 3D, a National Geographic film that premieres nationwide this Friday in IMAX 3D, is also a profile of James Cameron himself. What kind of person travels to the bottom of the ocean in a tiny, cramped sphere when he’s not making immensely successful, big-budget Hollywood movies? Deepsea Challenge 3D seeks to have Cameron answer this question for himself, as he oversees the creation and deployment of the private submarine Deepsea Challenger, a 24-foot tall, neon green, blade-like craft straight out of science fiction.

While that’s all well and good, we were hit by a review from IGN.com entitled “A Shallow Dive”. Keep reading below:

In James Cameron’s latest adventure movie, James Cameron stars as James Cameron, a superhero tasked by James Cameron to dive deeper than any person (or James Cameron) has ever dived before. If James Cameron can do it, the mission could open new doors for scientific discovery, bringing James Cameron and the rest of the world one step closer to complete understanding of our big blue planet. Plus, James Cameron would look like a total badass.

Towards the end of the film, Cameron stands amongst the ruins of a tsunami-ravaged village, suggesting his submarine’s research could, one day, help civilization predict such disasters. Maybe, but “why?” isn’t in the cards for this documentary. As much of an explorer as Cameron claims to be, he’s invested in art, that kind that explodes from discovery, speeds along against a ticking clock, and blossoms from the bottom of the ocean floor. Deepsea Challenge 3D bottles up that love and hands it to the next generation of James Camerons.

  1. All I have to say is, “Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch…”

Seriously, who doesn’t already know the answer to the question, “Is James Cameron a megalomaniac?”

The thing is, why should we care if he is, or if he isn’t? I mean, outside of the risk of having to spend time in idle chatter with him at your brother-in-law’s weekend barbecue, what difference does it make?

What *I* care about is what cool goodies the man brings to the table. It sounds like this is up there with the best of them. And if Cameron’s self-promotion allows him to bring more goodies NEXT time…all the better.
