After several days of rain, the sun shone briefly at the Cannes Film Festival during the 3D Society’s seminar for filmmakers. The standing-room only crowd packed into a small auditorium to hear Society members discuss the future of 3D, from Hollywood’s 3D schedule, to production, to autostereo.

More than 100 stayed after the seminar to share beverages and contacts on the deck overlooking Cannes Harbor. ‘The Great Gatsby’ in 3D opened this year’s gathering using XPAND 3D technology. Cannes is far more than a film festival.

Buyers and sellers from around the world gather annually to make deals and set the course for the theatrical content business years ahead. Notably, 129 3D movies were presented at the market during the festival. Surveying the booths populating the market, 3D Society member Sylvain Chivot, producer at Talantis Productions, was impressed. “I found amazing films from China, Thailand, Russia, Denmark, Japan, Germany, and France. Quite a few animated and horror genre films. I found amazing films at this market,” he marveled.
