The 2013 U.S. Open begins next Monday, August 26th at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens in New York City, and ESPN’s telecasts will be lit with the industry’s first 100% LED lighting set. Ferri Lighting Design & Associates (FLDA), the New York-based Emmy Award-winning team behind renowned sports installations, including multiple designs for ESPN, NBC Sports and the MLB Network, has created the industry-first design for the installation, which includes three outdoor locations, which include the ESPN announce booth; and two locations in the main stadium at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens in New York City.
The FLDA design for ESPN is notable for its ability to leverage a green production standard, using a completely LED installation, and creating enough light to counteract the sun’s brightness for the outdoor interview set. This year marks the fifth U.S. Open that FLDA has collaborated on with ESPN.
With this being said, it is not just big TV networks that can revamp their environment with lighting. Homes and businesses can do so too. A feature that schools can benefit from for example, is something like high bay fixtures, which creates powerful illusions at a longer range. It would be great in a school’s sports hall.

100% OUTDOOR LED LIGHTING INSTALLATION FOR ESPN’S U.S. OPEN SET
FLDA Creates Dynamic, Bright Lighting for Three Locations at U.S. Tennis Center
NEW YORK – Ferri Lighting Design & Associates (FLDA) today announced that it has designed and installed the industry’s first 100% outdoor LED lighting set for ESPN’s 2013 U.S. Open telecasts. The installation includes three outdoor locations, which include the ESPN announce booth; and two locations in the main stadium at the U.S.
“We have been working on the U.S. Open for the last fifteen years with a few cable networks, but ESPN has always been very receptive to breaking new ground with production technology, and it is this mind-set that has helped deliver this year’s all-LED set,” said Mick Smith, lighting designer. “We have learned, over the past few years, how to use LED lighting to augment our design so that we can maximize the firepower of lighting to work with the power of natural sunlight. This year, I feel that – with ESPN – we have laid the foundation for a new outdoor lighting paradigm.”
“We have a strong working relationship with ESPN, and have been proud of our work for them, so it makes sense that we would have the opportunity to create the first all-LED outdoor set of this kind for them,” said Bruce Ferri, president and senior designer of FLDA.
FLDA’s Emmy Award-winning team has achieved renown for its sports studio installations over the years, including multiple designs for ESPN, and for NBC Sports and the MLB Network, among others.
