You may be wondering why I’m reviewing a 3 DoF headset. The answer is simple, now that Oculus has dropped the Oculus Go, which opens up a huge need for a quality 3 DoF headset. As you may have also heard already, Time Magazine has picked the Pico Neo 2 Eye as one of the 100 Best Inventions of 2020. And it deserves that award rightfully so.
But that is not the only stellar VR headset from Pico. The Pico G2 4K Enterprise now reigns supreme as the number one 3DoF headset. Weighing in at only 448 grams with a 75Hz refresh rate, an RGB camera, 128Gb of internal storage, and The bonus of being able to add up to a 256GB MicroSD card to store every VR video that you can imagine and still room to spare.
The Pico G2 4K Enterprise uses the RGB Stripe configuration for its 4k LCD giving your 3840×2160 screen resolution. The screen door is eliminated using a ppi (pixels per inch) of a whopping 818ppi.
The Pico G2 4K comes with a remote, but unlike your old Oculus Go, you don’t need a remote. There are controls built into the side of the headset that can do anything that you need to do.
The kiosk mode can be chosen to dedicate the G2 4KSEnterprise to a single application for simple usecases.
The 4200mAh Batterylasts you 2.5 to 3 hours, more than enough for most use cases.
Pico made a great choice in the material for the face pad. Not only is it replaceable, but being a leatherette material, it can be easily cleaned and disinfected.
The audio is good but not great. In noisy environments, you will probably need to plug into the 3.5mmjack for headphones, but that is the same for almost all headsets.
The 101-degree field of view is the industry standard right now,and the Pico stays in its lane with that.
There arethree variations of the Pico G2.
The G2 4Kisalmost identical to the Pico G2 4KS. The big difference is that the Pico G2 4K has a larger capacity of built-in memory: 128GB versus 32GB. The Pico G2 4KS also has a twenty percent larger battery.
And the G2 4K Enterprise is the perfect choice for both consumers that are not big gamers and more interested in VR Video.
The G2 4k S has much better support for Enterprise users than what Facebook offers on the Go. It’s asturdy built headset and will handle thebumps and pings that enterprise use usually entails.
I only have two caveats for the G2 4K S, and that is the head strap. It reminds me of a divers face mask with rubber straps holding it to your head. I would have much preferred the same halo headband type that the pico Neo Eye 2 has. Which in my opinion, is the best on the market. That point is especially true in light of the cracking issues with the new Quest 2. A huge recall worthy mistake by Oculus, which goes to show no one is perfect.
I purposely waited to post this review as I didn’t want to be overshadowed by the Quest 2. This is the best top of the line 3 DoF headset on the market, and it deserves the accolades and the best exposure.
With access to both Viveport App Store and the ability to add Steam games, you have a winning combination for many games and apps.
This headset has definitely earned its place in the VR ecosystem.
