Today the 3D world mourns the loss of one of its true pioneers. 3DGuy would like to extend its deepest condolences to the family of Alain Derobe. Alain was a true cinema master. With a breath of films including the recently nominated 3D film, Pina, with Wim Wenders. Though it did not win the Academy Awards it has won the Best Documentary at the European Film Awards 2011 and at the German Film Awards 2011.
His films include Tropic of Cancer and many other French 3D films, including SAFARI 3D, CAMARGUE, CHARTREUX, IRRUPTION, HÉROS DE NIMES, RÉVEIL DES GÉANTS, as well as films for theme parks, museums and events.
His technical contribution to 3D are just as impacting. From 1992 on, he specialized in three-dimensional photography and large format cinema. He developed various systems for 3D stereoscopic recordings (such as the 3D Rig by P&S Technik). He was the founder of the AFC (Association of French Cameramen) and President of UP3D, the Association of French Stereographers. Additionally, he also advised various companies in the 3D field, such as Transvideo (monitors) and Iridas (software).
I met Alain at one of the first Dimension 3 Conferences and took 3D class with him. He opened my eyes to how beautifully creative 3D could be. For him 3D was as natural as opening his eyes. He certainly opened my eyes and inspired me to strive for the kind of creativity and beauty that I saw in his cinematography. I count myself very lucky to have met and studied under him.
