Parts of Hector Martin’s Open Source Drivers have been used to reverse engineer Xbox 360’s Kinect motion controller and transform it into a stereoscopic 3D Video camera by UC Davis visualization researcher Oliver Kreylos. Through documents and videos posted on his site, Keylos explains how he feeds the streams from his peripheral’s infrared and color camera’s into a custom app that interpolated and reconstructed the end result, 3D virtual reality environment he can interact and modify. In the videos he proves his feat by manipulating a 3D rendering of his room, accurately measuring objects with the motion controller. We could see sales boost as DIY circuit benders take a shot at the hack themselves.
