Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Ocarina of Time, one of the highest acclaimed video games of all time, is being reborn this summer for the Nintendo 3DS. It will take what we loved about the original and add the swankiness of new 3D graphics.

When writing about a game widely considered to be one of the greatest of all time, it’s easy to hark on about sales and ignore the finer details.

But to do that to Nintendo 64’s 1998 release Ocarina of Time would do the game an injustice. Whether its riding a horse across the field of Hyrule or pulling the Master Sword from its stone, the game is full of magical moments that make it a true action adventure spectacle.

Gameplay is a blend of sword-based combat, exploration, puzzle-solving and collecting, with an array of weapons to discover – including a Hookshot that launches protagonist Link up to out-of-reach ledges.

Now Nintendo has brought Ocarina of Time to 3DS with revised 3D graphics, touch screen and gyroscope functionality, as well as Boss Challenge and Master Quest modes for more experienced players – all running at a smooth 30 frames per second.

Nintendo’s UK marketing assistant Roger Langford tells MCV: “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D takes one of the greatest games ever produced and adds a host of new features, making it an incredible experience for fans as well as the perfect entry point into the world of Zelda for newcomers.”

Standing the test of Time

Colossal sales figures and supreme critical reception back up the game’s engrossing gameplay. The original Ocarina of Time sold over 7.6m copies, and it currently has the highest ever Metacritic score – a review average of 99.

Many older players will already know and love Ocarina of Time, while the younger generation of gamers will want to know what all the fuss is about for themselves.

Still heralded a masterpiece today, Ocarina of Time 3D will certainly give the 3DS a big summer boost when it hits shelves this month.

Pre order bonuses

Those who pre-order Ocarina of Time on 3DS will receive the game in a limited edition gold-sleeve box, which comes with a double-sided poster.

The legends of Zelda

There has been 15 Zelda titles released so far (not including the strange Philips CD-i games). The first arrived on the original Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, with a selection of titles released on every major Nintendo format since.

Marketing a classic

Nintendo will be running TV adverts around the release of Ocarina of Time 3D, showcasing its new features. Online takeovers will appear on websites during release week, while a print campaign will run in specialist magazines. The game will be re-promoted throughout the summer.

25th anniversary

This year marks the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise. Apart from Ocarina of Time on 3DS, Nintendo is also releasing Skyward Sword on Wii later this year. The firm says 2011 is shaping up to be ‘the year of Zelda’.
