Legend3D, Inc., a 2D to 3D conversion technology and services industry pioneer, shared a review of the company’s notable achievements in 2013. Topping the list, was the company’s completion of three full feature films—The Little Mermaid, Man of Steel, and The Smurfs 2. To further demonstrate its commitment to the 3D industry and its projected growth, Legend3D opened a new 60,000 square-foot facility in Southern California and an aggressive research and development (R&D) program to introduce new conversion production tools. With projects already underway with Sony, Paramount, Disney, MGM, BBC Films and Warner Bros., the company is primed and ready for 3D to continue its upward trend in 2014.
“With the recent news that nine of the top 10 movies for summer 2013 were 3D films, it’s no longer a question of if 3D is here to stay. It’s here and dominating the box office,” said Brian Robertson, Legend3D‘s Chief Executive Officer. “At Legend3D, we’ve long operated on the belief that high quality 3D captivates audiences and expands filmmakers’ creative toolsets, while simultaneously empowering studios to produce successful feature films.”
So Cal Facility Expansion
Legend3D moved into a new high-tech facility located in Carlsbad, Calif., with the capacity to allow more than 400 artists and creative supervisors to collaborate on its growing slate of films. The headquarters feature an impressive 3D theater, dedicated training centers and creative meeting spaces fully equipped with cutting-edge technology, more than two petabytes of storage, as well as a staff fitness facility and locker rooms. Tom Sinnott, Legend3D Chief Operating Officer, commented, “Our state-of-the-art facility is designed to foster innovation and support our artists in creating the highest quality work. The new headquarters gives us a place to grow and the flexibility to work concurrently on a number of high profile films and catalog projects.”
3D Projects
The Legend3D stereo team took on several films, from Disney’s The Little Mermaid to Warner Bros. Man of Steel, while also providing conversion services for sequences of Metallica’s Through the Never concert film and commercials for The Coca-Cola Company, Target and Disney. “Our proprietary software paired with creative expertise resulted in films that were well received by critics and filmmakers. The studios were impressed with the level of service and comprehensive back-end support we’re able to provide,” said Legend3D Creative Director and Stereo VFX Supervisor, Jared Sandrew.
R&D Efforts
Building upon the company’s market-leading conversion technology, Legend3D‘s robust R&D program resulted in innovative new tools designed to allow artists to move elements in real time—dramatically reducing overall shot production time. Legend3D Executive Producer Matt Akey noted, “The production management software we’ve developed has taken our services to the next level and provided the producers and studio executives we partner with the highest level of transparency and confidence. Our production pipeline now operates in real time, across our facilities and vendors, allowing us to provide concise and immediate production reporting. Our clients always know where their films are at any point in time.”
