With the arrival of The Martian on Ultra HD Blu-ray, we are now able to watch a video of unparalleled quality and resolution. What’s more with the right monitor this disk gives us HDR or High Dynamic Range video. What HDR does is give you a much wider range of both whites and blacks in the image with the range of color far exceeding normal HD and even UHD video. Don’t let anyone tell you different about resolution either. On a good quality monitor, you can see the difference between HD at 1920×1080 and Ultra HD Blu-ray, which delivers 3840×2160 lines of resolution. That is four times the resolution.
This version of The Martian is a perfect example of what Ultra HD Blu-ray can provide. Shot in 5K initially, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version blows away anything that you have been able to see in the home. The vibrant colors and hues are breathtakingly real. The evidence is in many of the little things. The actors skin glistening with sweat looks so real you think that it will drip off the screen. The red and orange rocks and gritty soil of Mars display subtle changes of hues. The Earth never looked so blue, and the puffiness of the clouds surrounding so white.
Most know the story by now, thought dead, astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead and left behind by his crew after a fierce storm ravages the planet. With little to survive on, Watney must rely on his wits and ingenuity to find a way to not only live but signal Earth to rescue him. On Earth, NASA and a team of dedicated international scientists race against time to bring him home.
A spectacular 34 awards and 175 nominations for Ridley Scott’s science fiction masterpiece supported by a stellar performance by Matt Damon cement this as a must have in any video collection. It certainly is a hallmark of my personal collection. I found myself as immersed in the film as I was when I first viewed it in the theater. Couple that with the sheer beauty of the imagery of this new technology and you have a movie that you will enjoy over and over again.
The extended edition includes an extended cut featuring 10 minutes of brand new footage not shown in theaters as well as more than two hours of behind-the-scenes content. Included in the new material is audio commentary by renowned director Ridley Scott, writer/executive producer Drew Goddard and author of the novel Andy Weir. There is also a documentary of the science behind recreating Mars for the film; interviews with NASA specialists and engineers; and a Q&A panel discussion about the planned journey to mars featuring commentary from NASA experts.
The Martian is one of the most talked about films of the year and has been named one of the best movies of the year by groups such as National Board of Review, which also awarded top honors to Ridley Scott for Best Director, Matt Damon for Best Actor and Drew Goddard for Best Adapted Screenplay.
