NASA’s 3D help

With NASA using 3D technology to assists them more and more, we are happy to see that new findings are becoming more of a 3D reality.

A new image, using 3D technology from NASA’s Dawn spacecraft shows a mountain three times as high as Mt. Everest, in the south polar region of the giant asteroid Vesta. The peak of Vesta’s south pole mountain, seen in the center of the image, rises about 13 miles above the average height of the surrounding terrain.

The image was constructed from information from NASA’s Dawn space probe, which is orbiting the huge asteroid – or ‘protoplanet’ – Vesta at a height of 420 miles and then translated into a 3D image to give you a better idea of how it looks.

Researchers are set to reveal more of their findings about the curious ‘protoplanet’ soon.

Members of NASA have voiced their excitement in this finding and hopefully more to come with images in 3D as well. The 3D technology used though, definitely helps the rest of us to get a better grasp of this amazing asteroid.
