Technology rarely develops with any degree of logic, something we can see in the current state of the second-screen industry, which consists of a random collection of unrelated third-party apps, show-specific apps, Facebook and Twitter.
It’s a confusing landscape to viewers and advertisers alike, which is why Piksel predicts there we will be a major shakeout soon. The shakeout will be lead by the various multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) who will buy up some of the more popular third-party apps, incorporating their functionality inside a larger, more all-encompassing program guide/remote control application that will also provide the framework on which networks can hang their unique second-screen experiences.
