ATLANTA — Pioneer gave CEDIA Expo attendees a sneak peek at the company’s first Blu-ray Disc players with 3D playback capability.In total, the company showed three players — two under the high-end Elite badge and one under the core Pioneer trademark. Little, except the core feature sets, was said to be finalized on any of the players, including pricing and model numbers. The players are slated to ship before the end of the year, and price points will be determined closer to launch time, after a full assessment of the competitive landscape, the company said. The models include HDMI 1.4a outputs to accommodate the Blu-ray 3D specifications, and were tentatively identified as models Pioneer BDP-430, Pioneer Elite BDP-41FD and Pioneer Elite BDP-43FD.
All three are said to load and playback discs “far faster” than current-generation Blu-ray players and will include Internet video streaming like current models including content from partners Netflix, YouTube and the newly added Pandora music service. All are DLNA 1.5-certified to stream audio, video and pictures from networked PCs.Pioneer was also said to be working on an app to control the players and new Pioneer A/V receivers using Android-based smartphones via Wi-Fi. The Android app joins the iPod/iPhone app Pioneer developed to offer control for a limited number of Pioneer product functions.None of the players include built-in Wi-Fi receivers, but Pioneer will sell an optional dongle for each. The Elite players also offer integration control over IP (Ethernet), one way only on the Elite BDP-41FD and two-way on the Elite BDP-43FD.The Elite BDP-43FD will also incorporate a more solid, armored construction design to dampen disc vibration, better quality internal components and gold contacts on the HDMI output. Elite models will carry a two-year warranty, compared with a one-year warranty for the Pioneer unit.
