Every year we are treated to Shark Week on The Discovery Channel. One week of scary, but immensely informative tv shows all about sharks. But this year the experience got a lot more real, with VR.

When a shark shows its pearly whites, the Discovery Channel wants you to see it in a whole new way: There’s an app for that.

As “Shark Week” begins this Sunday, the network is offering a number of new virtual and augmented reality experiences for hanging with hammerheads through its Discovery VR app.

Special “Shark Week” programming will be available through the app for viewing with virtual reality headsets such as Samsung Gear VR or Oculus Rift. One of the VR experiences is in partnership with Sony Pictures. “Dare to Swim in The Shallows” offers a look at the new horror film that finds Blake Lively facing off with a great white. Another segment called “Surviving Sharks” takes viewers underwater with Australian Navy diver and shark attack survivor Paul de Gelder.

Of course, if you just want to kick back with your favorite beverage and snacks to watch on your big flat screen, the Discovery Channel has a variety of programming for the 28th anniversary of “Shark Week,” which runs through July 3.

One of the more intriguing shows of the week, “Isle of Jaws,” airs Sunday at 10 p.m.
