Sony’s shocking letter to 3D movie theatres

Something no one really saw coming may change the cost of 3D movies for cinema goers in the near future.

One of the major theatre companies in hollywood has just changed some of their policies that will be inforced in May of 2012.  In a letter, Sony Pictures Entertainment has notified theater owners that it will no longer pay for 3D glasses, marking a major policy shift.  This big shock has started the rumor mill saying that many other studios are considering this idea as well.

“This is an issue that has to be resolved between us and our exhibition partners. We are trying to give them a very lengthy lead time in regards to the change in policy,” Sony worldwide president of distribution Rory Bruer said.

Many theatre owners are not feeling too happy about this change since they’ve already spent enough money in converting their screens to 3D.  According to one source in the exhibition community, they believe that they shouldn’t have to incur the cost of supplying glasses too.

The price tag for 3D glasses is another shock with studios spending five to ten million dollars worldwide for a single film, but most of the cost is incurred in the North American marketplace.
