The Dirty Little Secrets at CES 2013

4K TVs are definitely the biggest news at CES this year. And literally, I mean big.

HiSense is at CES showing off a 110 inch ultra high DEF TV, the XT 900. Another quite amazing product was there transparent 3D TV.

Another Chinese manufacturer, TCL, showed off a 110 inch “China Star” 3D 4K TV. Add to that they’ve got a fantastic tie-in with the new Iron Man 3 movie, which is being filmed in China and Florida.

Sony introduced a 55″, 65″ and a whopping 84 inch Bravia XBR ultra HD 4K, which costs an unbelievable $25,000 to land in your living room. All of which have 3D features.

Panasonic’s 56 inch 4K OLED display showed up Tuesday on the CES floor with 3D.

Toshiba already has the 50 5Z L2 4K TV on the market. At CES, a showed off an 84 inch version of the new L 9300 series with 3D.

Samsung showed off what it calls its 85 inch floating TV. This 4K also offers 3D.

Dolby showed off its glasses free 4K 3D TV technology at CES 2013. While they won’t be making their own TVs, they will be licensing the technology to third parties.

Even Visio showed off 55″, 65″ and 70 inch ultra HD TVs with Visio’s Theater 3D technology.

LG is ultra HD TVs will come in a 55 inch, 65 inch, and 84 inch sizes. Their passive 3D technology in 4K has the best 3D 4K images that we’ve seen. The 55 inch set will come in somewhere around $12,000.

4K is definitely going big. Both the sizes of the TVs and the prices. As always, the early adopters will pay the premium prices for having these in their living rooms in the near future. But it is estimated within two years, prices will drop and more and more people will invite 4K into their home.

So what is the dirty little secret? The item that’s not getting much talk, but is very noticeable in the specs of every one of this TVs that we described is that they all have 3D as a main feature.

There’s been much chatter lately about the death of 3D. But the facts tell a different story. While there have been many missteps in encouraging content creation for 3D the steady push worldwide for 3D content reveals the true story.

Sony and 3Net are rumored to be creating a stockpile of 4K 3D content. The steady flow of 3D films is another source of growing content for 4K 3D TVs. Independent 3D filmmakers are hard at work creating content for the Asian and European market. All of the 4K sets announced also featured advanced technology for up-scaling current HD to 4K with excellent results.

The question isn’t whether 3D will have a resurgence in the US, the question is, when?

This is valuable info, that a common variable in all the 4k fuss this year is that by default–it seems– that 3D is bundled in. So it’s not a frill anymore, it’s to future proof a 4k TV system isn’t it 😉

    Regards
