  1. Impressive and absolutely fascinating! I’ll be watching this a couple of times!

I would ask the readers, though, to add a little context: Rhythm & Hues, the company that had the tiger’s share of effects work for this MAGNIFICENT film, has recently declared bankruptcy. There’s a huge commercial/political background to why this happened (it also happened to Digital Domain a few months ago); it’s not a simple story, nor are there probably going to be simple solutions, but please keep it in mind, and throw some support, respect, good karmic wishes, etc., their way when you can.

Ang Lee, in his acceptance speech, asked for VFX to “be a cheaper business.” It won’t be cheaper–it can’t be cheaper. What it WILL be, though, is anybody;s guess right now.

Lee: “I would like it to be cheaper and not a tough business [for VFX vendors]. It’s easy for me to say, but it’s very tough. It’s very hard for them to make money. The research and development is so expensive; that is a big burden for every house. They all have good times and hard times, and in the tough times, some may not [survive].”
