The 3D Theater Session at each year’s Stereoscopic Displays and Applications Conference showcases the wide variety of 3D content that is being used, produced and exhibited around the world. The event was hosted by Andrew Woods of Curtin University, Australia. Just submitting is not enough, in fact, the chosen entries were not revealed until arriving at the conference.

The wait is over and one of the select few included Ole Schell’s innovative 3D short,The Sunday Morning Drive. This low budget short is both creative and fun.

Schell recounted the story behind the story.

“I grew up on the Pacific Coast Highway in Northern California just outside of San Francisco. As a boy I would hear stories and sometimes actually hear an infamous  group of men who would race on select days on the beautiful but treacHerous highway. It has been happening since the 1950s and some of the riders are world class.

I had always thought it would be awesome to be the first people to race with them in an automobile. We put together a pitch and got a race car from Audi, enlisted the services of pro rider  and staged several  invitation only rallies edited to look like one. We came up with a loose fictional story that would incorporate real racing footage. The premise was we were the first team invited to race against  the bikes in an automobile and that last years champ and the newest contestant would get the advantage of air support for navigation. So we also had a helicopter and airplane in tow.
The film features an Audi R8 racecar,  30 motorcycles a seaplane, helicopter and Australian Super-model.”

We documented the whole thing with 6 Sony TD 20s and TD 10s since they were small and could be mounted on the bikes and car. We also mounted several GoPro Hero 3D rigs in some of the harder places like under and on the side of the airplane wing.

The SD&A 3D Theater Session was held 5:30PM – 7:30PM, Monday 3 February 2014.
The SD&A 3D Theater Session is held as part of the 2014 Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference, which in turn is part of the IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging: Science & Technology Symposium (2-6 February 2014).
The 2014 SD&A conference was held at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square Hotel, San Francisco, California, USA.
All 3D footage screened at the 3D Theatre Session is shown in high-quality polarized 3D.
