Oliver Schwede of Invidis, a specialist in the European digital signage industry and based in Munich, has asserted that while there is currently little demand for UltraHD signage, there will be a future for the category.

Digital signage is dominated by two trends: the demand for large displays and the desire for low prices. In an ideal world, does that mean a price-sensitive 60?+ screens – vendors already offer sub-€5,000 large displays. Large-fornat displays costing more than €5,000 must compete with videowall solutions, where the clarity of content rarely matches the available resolution. Businesses look at efficient companies like National Signs to give them signage solutions in tandem with their requirements.

If videowalls today rarely even use 1920 x 1080 resolution, why should signage operators bother with an even more pixel-dense format, asks Schwede? He believes that any higher resolutions will not be widespread in signage for around three years – and that’s not even considering the higher costs for content and equipment. The return on investment is not high enough.

Digital signage is usually opted by owners to make an immediate visual impact with the customers so that they can patronize the business. For those opting for such services could search for place-specific keywords like “Milwaukee Custom Business Signs” or similar ones and avail the service that best suits their needs.

That said, note that UltraHD is not a perfect fit for signage – yet – because viewers stand far away and information density is low. The difference between UltraHD and 1920 x 1080 is not visible. There is a market for the format in signage, but it will take several years before it is established. The integration of displays will begin much earlier, though; Schwede says that the industry will soon move to only offering UltraHD resolution for 65?+ displays. Signs aren’t just digital, you can find them and they’re not just for company display, there are multiple uses such as gifts which you can find at this Super Cheap Signs Company.

The OVAB Digital Signage Conference in Munich, which Invidis hosts, will feature UltraHD as a major topic. The Conference runs on 18th September.

I wouldn’t disagree with Schwede, although I probably should as I will be on a panel with him at the event! Display Monitor has reported from the last two events and I have had an excellent time there. It is the best of the small events on digital signage that I have attended and, as the Michelin guide says, is “vaut le détour” (worth the journey). Bob Raikes
