JPEG 2000 has become an industry standard for archive and digital intermediates due to its efficiency in encoding high quality images in relatively small files. However, some challenges exist, primarily in that encoding JPEG 2000 is very processor intensive.
The time and processing power required to create JPEG 2000 files is a hindrance. Until now, either extremely costly systems were required or the encoding process was exceedingly slow, which also means that making any changes to J2K files has been particularly frustrating.
To eliminate these roadblocks, Cinedeck added J2K encoding and developed the timesaving ability to insert-edit directly to JPEG 2000 files (as well as to ProRes, DNxHD, and AVC-Intra). With Cinedeck, you have the full flexibility of creating a set of J2K VMMs (Virtual Mastering Media), giving you the freedom to insert content anywhere in a blank file, or you can punch changes into your already encoded JPEG 2000 files. For your JPEG 2000 masters, this insert capability means fixes and simple changes take mere minutes and you only need to QC the changed portion versus QC-ing the entire file.
